Zinabu Issah falls short in Paralympic discus final
The Ghanaian missed out on a medal in the women’s discus throw (F57) but remains in contention for shot put glory at the 2024 Paris Paralympics
Ghanaian para-athlete Zinabu Issah finished 12th in the women’s discus throw (F57) final at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games on Saturday (31 August), at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis.
Issah, 44, had shown promise in the qualifying round on Friday (30 August), where she secured third place with a throw of 24.39m. However, she struggled to replicate that form in the final.
Her first attempt in the final reached 23.16m, and she was unable to improve in her subsequent attempts, recording distances of 23.14m, an illegal throw, and 22.52m.
With only two attempts remaining, Issah managed to throw 23.69m, followed by a final effort of 23.85m, but it wasn’t enough to secure a podium finish.
The gold medal went to Algeria’s Nassima Saifi, who set a new Paralympic record with a throw of 35.55m, breaking her own previous record of 33.33m from the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
China’s Xu Mian took silver with a personal best (PB) of 32.81m, while Uzbekistan’s Mokhigul Khamdamova claimed bronze with a throw of 32.75m.
Although Issah missed out on a medal in the discus, she has another opportunity to compete in the women’s shot put (F57), which kicks off on Wednesday (4 September) at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis.
