Zongo Lane fire fuelled by an idol in a building, say residents

The residents say the occupants of the warehouses which got burned resisted each time the ancestral family requested to perform rituals

Some residents in Zongo Lane in Accra say the cause of the week-long fire in the area was fuelled by an idol stationed in the building for years.

The residents say the occupants of the warehouses which got burned resisted each time the ancestral family requested to perform rituals.

However, the claim is yet to be supported.

Speaking to Asaase News, the witnesses emphasised that until the rituals are performed, the fire will not be fully extinguished.

The fire, which began on 1 September 2024, engulfed shops and warehouses filled with home appliances, mattresses, plastics and leather materials, making it difficult to control.

However, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully extinguished the massive fire after a week-long effort.

In a statement on Facebook, the GNFS said despite numerous challenges, including locked shops and warehouses, acrid smoke, intense heat, and collapsing structures, firefighters confined the blaze and prevented it from further spreading.

Meanwhile, speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (4 September), a member of the public relations department at the GNFS, Station Officer 1 Michael Okin Walter, attributed most fire incidents to wooden structures and improper wiring.
