Bolgatanga Technical Institute shutdown over students’ riot

The Upper East Regional Minister has directed the students to leave the school premises immediately

Students of the Bolgatanga Technical Institute have been ordered to vacate the school hours after chaos broke out on Tuesday in a protest against the arrest of some staff and students by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB).

The riot resulted in the destruction of school property and vehicles belonging to members of the school’s management.

School authorities told pressmen that the students and staff had been arrested on suspicion of engaging in examination malpractices.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu who gave the directive, said it is to allow peace to prevail.
He directed the student to leave the school premises immediately.

The regional minister condemned the actions of the students, saying “we’ll not sit and allow anyone to destabilise the peace within the region.”

The students vandalised vehicles belonging to some management members of the Bolgatanga Technical Institute.

Earlier, police personnel called in were unable to control the situation as they fired warning shots and tear gas.

The school’s principal, Yorose Zackary, told pressmen that two students of the school were arrested by officers of the NIB, who were in the school to monitor the examination, for possessing mobile phones.

He said an investigation by the NIB revealed that a staff of the school had created a WhatsApp group where leaked examination questions were dropped.

“When they went through the phones, they saw some questions believed to be the [exam] paper they were writing,” Zackary said.
