Cardinal Namdini Mining Ltd hands over two resettlement communities to Talensi

The two newly constructed communities are part of a relocation plan for a total of 117 families to make way for the setting up of the Namdini Gold project

Two new resettlement communities put up by Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited for residents of Biung and Accra in the Talensi district of the Upper East Region, have been commissioned.

The two newly constructed communities are part of a relocation plan for a total of 117 families to make way for the setting up of the Namdini Gold project.

The new communities come with reticulated electricity supply, improved sanitation and water supply, improved roads and other social amenities such schools and health facilities.

The company, in the project, has also injected US$7 million into the construction of a 25km road linking the Balungu community to the mine site.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, was hopeful that the establishment of the Namdini Gold project will create jobs for the locals and widen the development opportunities of the Talensi district and region.

While he commended Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited for adhering to the resettlement agreement which saw the timely completion of the resettlement project, Jinapor thanked the traditional authorities for working closely to ensure the success of the project.

Jinapor assured the communities of the government’s support to see to it that the company conducts its operations in line with accepted standards to improve the lives of the residents.

“I can assure the chiefs that the government will work hand in glove with Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, indigenes and locals of the Talensi traditional area do benefit from whatever will arise out of the mining operations that are going to take place in this catchment area.” Jinapor assured.

For his part, the chief executive officer of Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, Luis Santana said the company’s commitment to work in compliance, transparency and strict observance to world-class standards to support government’s socio-economic development efforts.

He said the company’s commitment to improve the lives of the locals formed part of the reason the resettlement project was executed without necessarily changing the way of life and social interaction of the affected people.

“The Buing and Accra Site Resettlement Project was planned to improve housing infrastructure without necessarily changing the way of life and social interaction of the project affected people, and in a more cost-effective way of providing urban-type services such as reticulated electric power, improved water supply, and sanitation, improved community access roads and social services including schools, health care facilities, religious places of worship among others for 61 and 56 families at the Accra and Biung families located within the Namdini Mining Area,” Santana reiterated.

The Tongraan, Naab Kugbilsong Nanlebegtang, the Paramount Chief of Talensi traditional area, in a speech delivered on his behalf, appealed to the company to make use of local expertise and labour so as to give jobs to his people.

He was also hopeful the coming into being of the mine would accelerate the development of the district and present it with several opportunities.

He, therefore, urged the people to be hospitable and especially live in harmony in their new settlements and take good care of the facilities.
