Director general of WTO Okonjo-Iweala visits Ghana

The WTO director general will hold a series of meetings, particularly with President Nana Akufo-Addo and other leaders, while in the country

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), will pay a two-day visit to Ghana from Tuesday (25 April 2023).

While in Ghana, she will meet policymakers, business leaders, female entrepreneurs and civil society, a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency on Monday said.

It said Okonjo-Iweala’s visit underscored the WTO’s commitment to reinforce further its support to sub-Saharan Africa.

The statement said the WTO director general will hold a series of meetings, especially with the president, Nana Akufo-Addo, and other leaders.

As part of activities marking her visit, Okonjo-Iweala will participate in a discussion on the theme “Making Globalisation Work for Africa”, to be organised by the Institute of Economic Affairs.

“I am very much looking forward to my visit to Africa. Africa is a vital part of the membership of the WTO. I look forward to strengthening our partnership with countries in the region,” Okonjo-Iweala said in the lead-up to her trip.

“African economies have taken major steps towards economic integration over the last few years at a time when the global trade landscape is changing rapidly.

“We must make sure we all work together to help our members in Africa take advantage of the opportunities offered by re-globalisation.”
