Ghana cycling team reveal strategic plans for 2023 African games

Dennis Moore, the communication director for the Ghana Cycling Federation, explained exclusively to Asaase Sports the deliberate choice of an alternative training location for the cyclists

Ghana’s cycling team commenced its residential camping ahead of its participation in the upcoming 13th edition of the African Games on 23 January, 2024, in Cape Coast

Dennis Moore, the communication director of the Ghana Cycling Federation, explained exclusively to Asaase Sports the deliberate choice of an alternative training location for the cyclists.

He said, “We are looking at getting a place that is suitable for the boys to train; for example, we cannot camp in Cape Coast because of the traffic conditions over there; it is impossible.” Ho was initially chosen as the preferred location, with Nsawam and, if necessary, Ablekuma serving as backup options.

According to Moore, the decision to go to Cape Coast was due to the unique requirements of cycling, which needs a spacious and safe training environment.

The cycling team is anticipated to kick-start their camp by the end of the week. Moore shared that ongoing discussions with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) are aimed at securing permission to use Nsawam as the team’s camp for the games.

Despite the alteration in plans, Moore assured that this would not impede the team’s readiness for the games.

He emphasised the extensive preparation undertaken since 2023, stating, “We actually picked up our training session last year October at Ablekuma, Olebu.”

The team’s commitment to consistent training was highlighted, with Moore noting their participation in the UCI event, Tour du Faso, in Burkina Faso.

“The boys are very active; it’s about consistency and training and as I speak to you, they are still in training, but just that we are not in camp.” Moore affirmed, emphasising the team’s dedication to maintaining a high level of preparedness. Although they are not currently in camp, the cyclists continue their rigorous training sessions.

The 13th edition of the African Games is scheduled to take place from 8 to 23 March, 2024, with Accra hosting the tournament for the first time at the Borteyman Sports Complex and Legon.

The event will feature 54 countries, showcasing 30 sporting disciplines, with eight serving as qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
