Harry Stacey makes final of men’s 100m freestyle at African Championships

Stacey's time of 51.26 seconds placed him in third place in the preliminary round behind South African duo Clayton Jimmie and Kris Mihaylov

Ghanaian swimming sensation Harry Stacey made a splash at the 16th Africa Aquatics Swimming and Open Water Championships in Luanda, Angola, on Tuesday (30 April), reaching the final of the men’s 100m freestyle event.

Stacey, one of two Ghanaians competing at the continental championships alongside female swimming star Nubia Adjei, clocked a time of 51.26 seconds in the preliminary heats, securing third place and a spot in the final.

South Africa’s Clayton Jimmie (50.78 seconds) and Kris Mihaylov (51.00 seconds) finished first and second, respectively.

The Ghanaian swimmer will now face off against a strong field in the final, including Jimmie and Mihaylov, Algeria’s Mehdi-Nazim Benbara (51.35 seconds) and Mohamed Abdelhakim Hamour (52.23 seconds), Egypt’s Abdalla Nasr (51.94 seconds) and Mohamed Yasser Omar (52.28 seconds), and Morocco’s Sebbata Marwane (52.05 seconds), all vying for the coveted gold medal.

This is just the beginning for Stacey, who is also set to compete in the men’s 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly events.

His teammate, Nubia Adjei, a national record holder in the women’s 100m backstroke and a multi-medalist at the 7th Africa CANA Zone II Swimming Championships, will be looking to make her mark in the women’s 100m backstroke, 50m backstroke, and 50m freestyle.
