MoFA introduces toll-free line service for farmers

Speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show with Benjamin Offei-Addo on Thursday (1 December), Graham said the new toll-free line is called 'Farm Krakye'

The programmes manager for Ghana Rice Projects, Ebow Graham, has said a toll-free line has been introduced to bring information closer to farmers in Ghana as part of plans to add value to the agricultural value chain.

Speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show with Benjamin Offei-Addo on Thursday (1 December), Graham said the new toll-free line is called ‘Farm Krakye’.

Graham said the Ghana Rice Projects is working in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication to help finalise its implementation for farmers to access it on all networks.

“So, what we do is that we are working with the ministry of communication to help us to integrate with all the networks,” he said.

“So, by March next year, it will be working well. Every farmer can dial up the toll-free line and get the needed information across the country.”

He added that the toll-free service will deliver agricultural information concerning aquaculture, poultry, and livestock.

According to Graham, there is an existing application on the USSD platform (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data), which farmers use but it requires more technological literacy, hence the toll-free service for all farmers to access.

“We have the USSD apps that are being accessed by farmers, but not all farmers can access USSD because they will not be tech-savvy in tapping their phones and all those, so we’ve brought in a toll-free line called farm krakye.”

0800991992 is the toll-free number but not active yet and farmers should expect to use it in March, next year.

‘Farm Krakye’ is being promoted by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Directorate of Extension, Crop Services, AGRA (Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa), Hope Line and JAK ( John A Kufuor) Foundation under the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) initiative.
