North East Region: CRS launches project to restore degraded vegetation

The project, which is being implemented in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture is under the theme: 'Enhancing Agriculture Land Restoration'

The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has launched a project in the West Mamprusi Municipality to plant trees to replenish degraded vegetation.

The project, which is being implemented in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture is under the theme: ‘Enhancing Agriculture Land Restoration’.

The North East Region is currently losing its vegetation due to the unnecessary felling of trees for charcoal, logs, and firewood.

Several rosewoods have allegedly been cut down in the region for exports.

Some residents who are in the charcoal business are relying on the shea trees and other economic tree species for commercial purposes.

But speaking at the launch of the project, Timothy Akanpabadai who represented the CRS country director urged residents in the West Mamprusi Municipality and the North East Region to restrain from cutting down trees that have economic benefits.

“I want to call on our chiefs, our opinion leaders, the Assembly, and our farmers that we have a better way of farming. There is a better livelihood that we can engage our people to do instead of destroying the environment,” Akanpabadai added.

The objective of the project is to improve livelihood, food security and increased resilience to climate change of smallholder farmers by restoring ecosystem services through scaling up of Evergreen agricultural practice.
