Prof Dodoo: GSA to launch “Ghana Automotive Code” to regulate to regulate vehicle standards
The GSA says it is poised to ensure sanity on the roads with the strict enforcement of standards in the automobile industry
Prof Alex Dodoo, director general of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) says the GSA will, in the coming weeks, roll out the Ghana Automotive Code to help regulate to regulate vehicle standards in the country.
It comes after the GSA was granted a policy directive by the Ministry of Trade and Industry to act as the regulator of vehicles in the country.
Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday(24 January) Prof Dodoo said, “Okada’s are not regulated and because of this most of their drivers do
not follow traffic directives … they behave as though the road is theirs; putting lives at risk.”
He said about 50% of road crashes in the country can be attributed to commercial motorbikes popularly known as “Okada”
“In the next few weeks, you will see us launching the Ghana Automotive Code. The amount of deaths attributed to Okada is too much … and this is because they are not regulated,” he said.
Unemployment
Prof Dodoo says strict enforcement of regulation in the country can help reduce unemployment.
“We have reached a time period where the safety of Ghanaians can only be ensured by following the rules and these rules must be enforced.”
“I dare say that if we, as a country, decide to enforce the directives of our LI’s [Legislative Instruments], we can create multiple job opportunities,” Prof Dodoo said.
