Ghana’s U-20 stars shine at Youth Invitational Athletics Championships

Ghana's 15-person team returned home with a staggering 19 medals -12 gold, five silver and two bronze from the four-nation event

Ghana’s athletics future looks bright after a medal haul at the Youth Invitational Athletics Championships held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire from 20–21 April.

A 15-strong team, selected from senior high schools (SHS) and clubs across the country, returned home with a staggering 19 medals—12 gold, five silver and two bronze.

Leading the charge were Joseph Andoh Kwofie and Naseera Quansah, both claiming a golden treble in the U-20 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. Kwofie blazed to a time of 10.69 seconds in the U-20 men’s 100m, while Quansah clocked 12.08 seconds in the women’s race.

Their dominance extended to the 200m, with Kwofie (21.67 seconds) and Quansah (24.51 seconds) securing gold. They then anchored their respective 4x100m relay teams to victory, with the men clocking 41.84 seconds and the women 48.56 seconds.

There was further success in the U-18 age group. Dennis Appiah Minkah (21.93 seconds) and Aisha Ibrahim (25.02 seconds) secured gold and silver, respectively, in the 200m. Ibrahim went one better in the 400m, winning gold in 56.43 seconds, while Latifa Haruna took bronze (1:00.01) after claiming gold in the 800m.

In the field events, there were further Ghanaian triumphs. Minkah struck again with victory in the U-18 men’s 110m hurdles (15.53 seconds), while Prince Yaw Gyasi Adu (1.90m) and Gloria Amoh (4.62m) secured gold medals in the U-18 men’s high jump and women’s long jump, respectively.

This impressive performance highlights Ghana Athletics‘ commitment to developing future stars. The competition served as a valuable opportunity to test themselves against regional rivals Burkina Faso, Benin and the host nation, Côte d’Ivoire.
