The programme, which was launched about four years ago is the product of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Isreal and Ghana

At least two hundred graduates from agriculture institutions in the country will soon undergo an 11-month internship in Israel, the Minister of Agriculture Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto has said.

The programme, which was launched about four years ago, is the product of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed among relevant bodies of the two countries.

Speaking at the 37th National farmers Day at Cape Coast in the Central Region, Dr Afriyie said the number has been doubled the increase in the number is due to the respect earned by Ghanaian trainees under the programme.

“From 51, and 75 students who participated in the 11 month paid internship in the 2018 and 2019 respectively , the programme has more than doubled student in participation.” Dr Akoto Said.

“Am happy to announce that 200 are embarking on the Israeli internship this year 2021 alone , the increase in the number  is due to the  high reputation gained by Ghanaian trainees in Israel due to their hard work, discipline and mentoring arrangement put in place by the ministry before departure.”

He added, “Back from Israel the trainees are assisted by the Ministry to develop agri-business plans and to seek support for their own private agro-business, the trainees who arrived this year are being assisted to develop their own businesses in Dawhenya  and Bawjiase for vegetable production.”

The climax of the 37th National Farmers’ Day celebration took place in the ancient city of Cape Coast, the Central Regional capital.

It was hosted jointly by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).

What is the Farmers’ Day about?

The Farmers’ Day in Ghana is celebrated on the first Friday of December each year to recognize the contributions of farmers and fishers in the country.

However, in election years, the celebration is moved to the first Friday in November.

The holiday is designed to pay respect to the importance of the farming and fishing industry in the socio-economic growth of the country.

It was instituted in 1985 by the then government after the industries showed a 30% growth in 1984.
