Asanko Gold condemns tragic Tontokrom incident, urges swift investigation

Asanko Gold Ghana Ltd, operators of the Asanko Gold Mine in the Ashanti Region have strongly condemned the tragic incident over the weekend where two contracted security personnel and a civilian lost their lives in a violent clash with illegal miners at the Tontokrom concession.
The mining firm in a press statement issued on Monday (4 March) is calling for immediate investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“Asanko Gold mourns the loss of our dedicated security personnel and a civilian in this senseless act of violence,” the statement said adding: “Our unwavering commitment to the safety of our employees and the community demands swift action against those responsible.”
Saturday’s incident occurred during routine security patrols, prompting Asanko to deploy its private security to Tontokrom. The security officers faced an ambush by armed illegal miners hidden in the bushes, leading to a tragic confrontation that resulted in the capture and subsequent lynching of two security personnel. A civilian also fell victim to the violence, bringing the death toll to three.
“For years, illegal miners have encroached upon our legally held concessions, posing a continuous threat to our staff and contractors,” the mining firm said. “This incident highlights the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address these persistent challenges.”

“We seek swift justice to serve as a deterrent against such criminal activities and ensure the safety and security of our operations,” the statement concluded.
