Ashesi University goes plastic-free

The initiative was championed by Melton Fellows at Ashesi, who have been researching plastic waste generation as part of a “Zero Plastic Waste” campaign.

Beginning in the 2023/2024 academic year, the Ashesi community is taking climate awareness efforts further by implementing a new initiative to reduce single-use plastics on campus.

The initiative was championed by Melton Fellows at Ashesi, who have been researching plastic waste generation as part of a “Zero Plastic Waste” campaign.

To further understand the role and contribution of students, faculty, and staff, they collected data and interviewed stakeholders across campus, including university cafeterias and snack shops.

The Melton Foundation is a leading proponent of global citizenship as a way to encourage people and institutions to collaborate on shared global challenges. Fellows at Ashesi help champion this effort.

Their findings, shared with the University’s operations team, identified vending points on campus as a significant contributor to plastic waste generation.

In partnership with all vendors on campus, the university has eliminated plastic (polythene) bags across campus — switching entirely to recyclable paper packaging and providing free reusable tote bags to all community members.

“We believe that local actions have the power to cause global impact, and that’s why it was important for us to contribute to this effort,” shared Innocent Chikwanda ’25, a member of the Melton Fellows programme at Ashesi. “We are excited to see these new changes happen here and see it as a step in the right direction. We still have work to do to fully achieve a zero plastics campus,” the university said.
