Bawumia, others mourn with people of Sirigu

Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia led a government delegation to commiserate with the businessman Roland Agambire on the death of his mother

Mourners from all walks of life thronged the Upper East regional town of Sirigu to commiserate with the businessman Roland Agambire, whose late mother was laid to rest over the weekend.

Augustina Akandiga Akwara Agambire, 64, died on 3 June and was known to be a staunch supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Her funeral attracted an array of dignitaries from the business sector, the government, opposition political parties and traditional leaders.

The vice-president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, led a government delegation that included ministers of state, chief executives of state institutions, municipal and district chief executives and NPP officials in the Upper East Region.

Also present were the Majority and Minority leaders in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and Haruna Iddrisu, as well as the Tagoe Sisters and religious leaders.

Tributes recalled the benevolence and unifying nature of the woman commonly referred to as the “Mother in Sirigu” and surrounding communities. She was passionate about children, particularly orphans.

The Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, said Akandiga Agambire will be remembered for her love of peace and unflinching commitment to the people’s welfare, especially the vulnerable.

NPP stalwart

A former MP for the area, Leo Kaba, paid glowing tribute to Madam Agambire and recalled her supportive role to the NPP in the region.

“She was a mobiliser, and even in the trying periods of the party, she stood firm and remained committed to the ideals of the party,” Kaba said.

The paramount chief of the Sirigu Traditional Area, Naaba Roland Atogumdeya Akwara III, said the royal household has lost a compassionate soul.

Mother Akandiga Agambire was a princess whose good counsel was valued and praised by elders and traditional leaders.
