Biakoye constituency elects first female parliamentary candidate

Formadi believes that her victory in the primary election means she will win the 2024 general poll as the first female MP for the area

The Biakoye constituency in the Oti Region has elected its first female parliamentary candidate in the recent National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary elections.

She won by 490 votes against six contenders, including the incumbent member of parliament (MP), Kwadwo Nyanpon Aboagye.

This is the third time the newly elected candidate, Jean-Marie Formadi, has contested the seat. She is a member of the national communications team of the NDC.

In an interview with Asaase News, Formadi said, her defeat in the 2015 and 2019 primaries did not discourage her from contesting again this year. She stated that she is keen on developing the constituency through job creation and innovative ideas.

The MP hopeful bemoaned the pace of development and citizen involvement in the constituency during the two terms of the incumbent MP. She said not even one town hall meeting has been held to give the constituents a voice to promote accountability.

Formadi believes that her victory in the primary election means she will win the 2024 general election as the first female MP for the area.

Vision

She plans to promote skills training, education and eradication of child trafficking on island communities in the constituency.

She emphasised the need to develop farming and fishing in the constituency because it is the major occupation.

“The people of Biakoye have waited for far too long for the MP, Aboagye, to support infrastructural development, supply fishing boats, farm and fishing equipment. He has disappointed them. He only supports his favourite party members and forsakes the masses,” Formadi said.

Formadi bemoaned the challenges of the many schools in the constituency that lack basic infrastructure. She said the incumbent MP blames the poor development on the party opposition status.

She said the MP was only giving excuses because there are other MPs in opposition who are developing their constituencies.

Formadi called on her contenders to rally behind her to win the general election and bring development to the constituents.

She promised to transform the constituency when given the mandate in 2024.
