Two drown in Volta Lake

Eye witnesses say the passengers had been left stranded at Kotokoli (an island community) because of a storm on the lake

Two persons have drowned in the Volta Lake in the Krachi West Municipality of the Oti Region.

The unfortunate incident occurred when the two deceased persons, Edu Sampson (a teacher in his 30s) and Afua Nyarkowaah (a woman in her 40s), and another male teacher were returning from Kete Krachi to their island community, Chinekope.

Eye witnesses say the passengers had been left stranded at Kotokoli (an island community) because of a storm on the lake.

When the storm subsided, they decided to continue with their trip. When they got to Kotoku Gyane, an island community, there was another storm on the lake.

The the boat operator, also a fisherman, negotiated a curve to escape the storm, but he lost control and the boat capsized.

The boat operator and the other teacher escaped to safety, leaving Sampson and Nyarkowaah to drown.

Their bodies have been recovered and sent to the Krachi Government Hospital morgue for preservation.
