CDD-Ghana: Parliament must probe military brutality in Ashaiman

The civil society group wants all those who have been affected by the military brutality to seek redress in the law courts

The Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) is calling for an immediate parliamentary probe into military brutalities on civilians in Ashaiman last Tuesday.

Military personnel besieged the notorious town Tuesday dawn following the killing of a member of the Ghana Armed Forces Band, Sherrif Imoro, 21, a trumpeter who was originally stationed at Sunyani in the Bono Region.

He was in Accra for a military course and in the last three weeks, had been visiting his parents in their home at Ashaiman every Friday, multiple media sources said.

It was during one of his visits that he was reportedly confronted by a gang who killed him.

In a statement on Tuesday (14 March), CDD-Ghana condemend the brutality and further called on affected persons to seek redress in court.

“We commend the efforts of the Ghana Police Service in tracking down the perpetrators of this dastardly act. However, in the broader spirit of exercising democratic control over the operations and conduct of the armed forces, we respectfully urge Parliament to investigate this incident; cause sanctions to be imposed on all persons implicated in this swoop at Ashaiman and ensure that justice is done.

“We also urge all persons directly affected by the conduct of the military personnel at Ashaiman to seek redress at the courts,” the statement said.

Disappointment

The civil society group also expressed disappointment over the seeming silence of the executive on the issue.

“The Executive branch must also be advised that failing to condemn and sanction the military officers implicated in this barbaric episode is a slippery slope toward a generalized state of lawlessness and anarchy.”

“The government’s tacit endorsement of this incident only goes to embolden military officers to take matters into their own hands whenever they deem it necessary to do so,” the CDD statement said.
