Ghana’s internal audit agency wins global award for exemplary performance

Ghana's Internal Audit Agency was commended for naming and shaming government agencies in the national newspaper for defaulting in their submission of Risk Based Annual Audit Plans

Ghana’s Internal Audit Agency has won the global award for exemplary performance at the ongoing Open Government Partnership summit in Estonia.

Other countries that grabbed awards at the summit are Brazil, Indonesia , Portugal, Kenya UK, Indonesia Spain Brazil and Armenia.

As part of a significant restructuring of the internal audit system, one of the measures the Internal Audit Agency of Ghana took is to establish 597 audit committees for prompt and effective implementation of the Auditor General’s recommendations.

Ghana’s internal audit agency was commended for naming and shaming government agencies in the national newspaper for defaulting in their submission of Risk Based Annual Audit Plans.

It singled out the agencies collaboration with the Economic and Organised Crime Office of Ghana (EOCO), in prosecuting four cases of financial irregularities.

The Open Government Awards says by introducing these audit committees, Ghana has taken a giant leap towards enhancing accountability, transparency, and financial management within the public sector.

The summit which is focusing on open government in the digital age, the potential of technology to make governance and policy-making more transparent and accountable, and the preservation of democracy.

It has brought together Heads of State and Government, representatives of civil society and policy makers around the world.
