Nigeria: Tinubu bans foreign trips for ministers for three months

President Tinubu bans public-funded foreign trips amid economic challenges and recent withdrawals from ECOWAS

President Bola Tinubu has issued a three-month ban on public-funded foreign trips, which require presidential approval two weeks in advance.

The memo noted that the president has temporarily banned all publicly funded international trips for federal government officials at all levels for three months from 1 April 2024.

The official communication is coming days after public outrage over the execution of a plan by the Accountant General of the Nigerian Federation and other government officials to hold a workshop in London.

Bola Tinubu aimed to reduce government spending on international travel for officials in line with COP 28 goals.

Nigeria is grappling with economic challenges, including persistent price rises, mass kidnappings and foreign exchange shortages.

As part of a larger reform agenda, the Tinubu-led administration has removed petrol subsidies and allowed the naira to float, worsening businesses’ constraints, especially manufacturers.

As the chairman of the Authority of the Heads of State of ECOWAS, President Tinubu also has to grapple with the recent withdrawal of three member states: Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger and the kinds of implications that might have on his leadership.
