Eastern Region: Seven die in galamsey pit collapse

The NADMO boss said the cause of the disaster is not known but can be attributed to the downpour on Monday

Seven persons have died in a galamsey (illegal mining) pit that caved in at Korletey near Akoase in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region.

Three survivors are on admission at the Holy Family Hospital at Nkawkaw.

Speaking to Asaase News, Alfred Owiredu Agyemang, the Eastern regional director of operations at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), said the incident occurred around 4.30pm on Monday.

Ten persons have so far been rescued.

The NADMO boss said the cause of the disaster is not known but can be attributed to the downpour in the area.

He said the district security team has visited the galamsey site to assess the situation.
