Eight illegal miners arrested

About 800 Changfans used by illegal small-scale miners were also destroyed in the three-day raid by Operation Halt-2, assisted by military personnel

At least eight people involved in illegal mining activities on rivers Offin and Pra in the Upper Denkyira West District have been arrested in an operation by the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry and the security agencies.

About 800 Changfans used by illegal small-scale miners were also destroyed in the three-day raid by Operation Halt-2, assisted by military personnel.

The Deputy minister of lands and natural resources in charge of mines, George Mireku Duker, who led the operation, said the government is committed to ending illegal mining in Ghana.

“We will not relent in clamping down these recalcitrant miners. We will permanently be patrolling and making sure we secure these river bodies. We are going to in a way put structures at vantage points, security posts at vantage points, also train river guards who will permanently be patrolling the river banks,” Duker told the media.

“We believe that will help in resolving this canker. The military has what they call the diamond craft, that diamond craft could hoover over without being noticed.

“And that could send signals and information to the situational rooms that we set up at the commission. So, we are so determined. We are giving hope to Ghanaians that this ministry has resolved to fight this canker,” he said.
