Employment Ministry: Stop engaging children in child labour

World Day Against Child Labour aims to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it

The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations is advising Ghanaians to desist from engaging children in child labour in the name of “culture”.

The call comes as Ghana joins the rest of the world to commemorate the World Day Against Child Labour on 12 June.

The World Day Against Child Labour aims to focus attention on the global extent of cthe phenomenon and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it.

The day brings together governments, employers, workers’ organisations, civil society, as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.

Concerted effort

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (12 June), the focal person on child labour at the Ministry of Employment, Peter Antwi, called for a concerted effort to end the scourge in Ghana.

Antwi also cautioned Ghanaians against hiding behind culture to force children into work, often unpaid.

“People have been hiding behind culture to force children into labour, but culture is dynamic and doesn’t justify child labour,” said Antwi.

“We all have to come together to fight child labour.

“The fight is not just for today: there is only one day for commemoration, but child labour goes on every day,” he said.
