“Cleanest Region” ranking campaign launched in Ho

The "Cleanest Region" campaign is to promote a healthier, more sustainable environment and foster competition among regions

Graphic Communications Limited, in partnership with Nerosal and Zoomlion, subsidiaries of the Jospong Group of Companies, on Tuesday, the 20th of February 2024, launched “The Cleanest Region” in Ghana campaign in Ho.

The campaign is supervised by the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA).

Speaking at the event, Volta Regional Minister Dr Archibald Yao Letsa said the campaign is in line with efforts to make Ghana a healthy destination for all, also to be in accordance with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, goal six, Clean Water and Sanitation.

“The purpose of this initiative is to promote the clean city mindset, which is in accordance with Sustainable Development Goal number six, which addresses access to clean water and sanitation,” he said.

Dr Letsa added, “The cleanest region ranking campaign is to inspire collective action towards creating healthier and more sustainable environment while fostering competition among regions to achieve higher cleanliness standards”.

Director of communications at Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Emma Adzoa Appiah Osei Duah, at the event urged the public to ensure a clean and healthy environment, and by so doing, Zoomlion has initiated a digital platform to aid households.

“Because the world is running so fast, we’ve also managed to join the digital train and we’ve produced a short code so that you can have communication with Zoomlion, and your waste issue will be sorted for you,” she said.

Representatives from other regions, including Western, Eastern, Greater Accra and Oti, at the event pledged to adhere to the campaign and make their regions clean for habitation.

Cromwell Oliver spoke on behalf of the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, according to him, “Western Region is doing a lot; we’ve started e-tanker, which was initiated by our regional minister and is running all over the 14 MMDAs”.

The 2022 winner for the cleanest region will be announced in July this year. The campaign will last for a year.

To be declared the cleanest region, residents would have to vote using the Nerasol digital platform to gather 40% of votes. In comparison, ESPA will evaluate each region for 60%.

The evaluation will be done on tree planting, waste recycling, the state of toilet facilities, cleanliness of drains and waste management in schools and households.

Queen of Ahoe, Ho, Mama Kuma II, who chaired the event, thanked the various stakeholders for the initiative.

She urged residents to practice and maintain hygiene in homes and workplaces.

Mama Kuma II also advised against indiscriminate waste disposal and urged households to be watchdogs to fellow households.

She believes the “Clean Region Campaign” will add to the fight against the odds of climate change and make the world a better place for all.
