#SafeMotorway4All: Government must engage local contractors to fix Tema Motorway, says MP

The chairman of the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament Kennedy Osei Nyarko says the government must consider financing options to help local contractors fix the Tema Motorway

The government must consider engaging local contractors to fix the Accra-Tema Motorway, the chairman of the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, Kennedy Osei Nyarko has said.

Several attempts by the government to rehabilitate the Accra-Tema Motorway have over the years proven futile.

Attempts to also use foreign contractors to fix the deplorable motorway have failed due to lack of funds.

Speaking in an interview with Asaase News’ Caleb Ahinakwah, Osei Nyarko proposed to the government to provide financing options to help local contractors undertake the project.

“We need the motorway to be repaired or reconstructed urgently,” Nyarko said as part of Asaase’s public interest campaign to signal the urgency to restore the Accra-Tema motorway to improve safety. “It needs to be commenced this year. It cannot wait for any other year.”

“And I am urging them to use the co-funding approach – that is the new funding approach the government can rely on, especially when we are going through these economic challenges.

“Put two or four local companies together; the government takes part and fund 50%… I don’t know why it is taking us that long to take that kind of decision,” he said.

About campaign

The Asaase Radio public interest campaign series will spotlight the importance of maintaining critical infrastructure and citizens’ power in bringing about change. The campaign promises to bring critical attention to an issue that affects the lives of many Ghanaians.

The Accra-Tema Motorway is an essential artery for Ghana’s economy, linking the largest port in the country with the capital city.

However, years of neglect and lack of maintenance have left the N1 in a state of disrepair, leading to accidents and traffic congestion.

In line with #SeeSomethingSaySomething and the government’s efforts to urge all Ghanaians to be active “citizens, not spectators”, the #SafeMotorway4All campaign will identify key challenges to the smooth working of the N1 and push for action to address these.

Don’t forget to join the campaign by sharing your experiences, appeals and solutions on social media with the hashtags #SafeMotorway4all.
