Bawumia: I am still an economist not IT expert

The vice-president says he is shifting more attention towards digitising the economy because it will help reduce waste

Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has laughed off claims that he has lost hold of the economy so he is now focusing on information technology.

“Sometimes people say, ‘we thought you were an economist but you are doing so much in IT space, have you left economics behind?’ Not at all, in fact it is because of the economy that I am focusing on digitisation,” Bawumia said in response to public pressure, particularly from his political opponents, for him to confront the country’s current economic issues.

Last week, former President John Mahama chastised Bawumia over his silence as Ghana’s economy goes through challenges following the Ukraine crisis.

In response, Dr Bawumia said that his priority is the government’s digitisation programme in order to reduce waste, enhance efficiency, and eliminate corruption in the public sector.

“The president gave me that mandate and opportunity to focus on how best we can transform and modernise Ghana to make sure that some of the challenges and risks that people who just want to operate in our economy are facing and how we mitigate those risks and how we make this economy and efficient economy and this is why I have focused on digitalisation, our economy will just not be able to stand on its own feet,” he said.
