Fuseini to lands ministry: Be transparent in probing alleged Achimota Forest land in Sir John’s will

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources says it has begun investigations into the alleged inclusion of land situated at the Achimota Forest among properties listed in the will of the late CEO of the Forestry Commission

The former MP for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini has urged the lands ministry to be transparent when investigating the alleged inclusion of Achimota Forest land in the will of the late CEO of the Forestry Commission Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John.

Speaking to Beatrice Adu on The Big Bulletin on Monday (23 May), Fuseini said a lack of transparency in the investigations will have grave consequences.

He said: “I think the beginning of it is to investigate the circumstances under which Sir John acquired the parcel of pieces of land in the Achimota forest. And also, the circumstances under which he acquired parts of the Ramsar site which is a protected site as well.

“Both sites; the Achimota forest and the Ramsar site come under the jurisdiction of the forestry commission. So, it is important we understand the circumstances under which the former chief executive officer acquired those properties.”

He added that “I expect the lands ministry to be transparent in the way it carries out the investigation because that could have consequences on the credibility of what he’ll be doing,”

Lands Ministry probes Sir John’s will

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has begun investigations into the alleged inclusion of land situated at the Achimota Forest among properties listed in the will of the late chief executive of the Forestry Commission Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John.

The decision to launch the investigation follows the publication of a will, purported to be by Sir John. The ten-page document has been circulating on social media and follows an affirmation by the government that it will protect the forest reserve in Achimota.

A statement issued by the ministry on Sunday (22 May 2022) said it has requested to see all documents relating to the land in question, at the start of an inquiry into the truth of the claims.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources said it will ensure the national interest is protected at all times in matters relating to the Achimota Forest.
