Gamey to employers: Humility could avert labour unrests

Three associations namely UTAG, TUTAG and registered anaesthetists have all recently declared strike over poor working condition

A labour expert, Austin Gamey has said employers must adopt what he describes as “management by humility” in their institutions and organisations in a bid to avoid labour unrest.

Four associations namely, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG), College of Education Teachers’ Association of Ghana (CETAG) and the Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anaesthetists (GACRA) have all recently declared strike over poor working conditions.

Talking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (11 January) on the subject of “Starting 2022 right: workplace cohesion,” Gamey said all conflicts can be resolved unless it is divine.

“The employer is saying ‘you cannot do this, you cannot do that,’ UTAG is saying that ‘give it to me or hell will break loose’, those kind of things, where is the information that needs to be shared, and how true is the information, do they believe you and what next,” he said.

“But I can tell you that even for the behind the scene efforts on the part of you, myself and somebody, maybe it could have  been worse than the way we see it now. So leadership is very important, and you must do it in humility, I insist.”

Gamey added: “If you are not humble enough and you want to rule by iron fist, you will get the results the same way and it won’t be palatable.”

The labour expert said arguments between employers and employees are not the surest way of dealing with issues at the workplace.

“In leadership there must be conversations and not arguments because in conversation there are no winners but in arguments one party must win which is unhelpful as it leaves resentment,” Gamey added.
