Ghana Immigration Service fume over killing of officer in Bawku

An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) was shot dead in the Upper East Region Monday evening by unknown gunmen

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has said that a high-powered delegation is scheduled to visit Bawku in the Upper East Region, following a gun attack on three of its officers, which left one dead.

The GIS said the visit will help to review the security situation in the conflict-prone area in relation to its operations in the Bawku sector command.

On Monday (3 April), three off-duty immigration service officers traveling in a private vehicle were attacked by unknown gunmen near the Bawku police station.

One of the officers died at the hospital and the remaining two are in critical condition at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital.

The GIS condemned the act in a statement issued on Tuesday, adding it was collaborating with the police and other security agencies to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to book.

Bawku is a market town in Ghana’s far north. For decades, the two largest ethnic groups in the area, the Mamprusi and Kusasi, have been locked in a dispute over who should control the town’s chieftaincy – a role both symbolic and politically potent in a region more than a day’s drive from the country’s center of power in the capital, Accra.
