Ghana to be acclaimed “originator” of Kente by UNESCO this year, says Deh-Kumah

Ghana is expected to be officially acclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the “originator” of Kente globally later this year, the executive director of the National Foklore Board, Bernice Ann Deh-Kumah has said.

Kente is a type of silk and cotton fabric made of interwoven cloth strips mainly worn by Ghanaian natives.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (27 March), Deh-Kumah said highlife music will be the next on the agenda.

“Ghana has no recognition in world folklore by UNESCO, so we are working to get our symbols, music, food and all our identity into the UNESCO system.”
“….After the register, we put in an application that we should have two elements and we proposed Kente and Highlife,” she said.

“. . . This year, Ghana will be given recognition as the creator of Kente. So that will be news across the whole world and it will create a market for people in Ghana . . . After that we move to highlife [for the UNESCO recognition],” Deh Kumah said.
