GRTCC lauds roll out of “Tap and Go” transport initiative

Similar to the popular Oyster Card used in the United Kingdom, “Tap and Go” is a digital card preloaded with cash. Passengers simply tap the card on a fixed machine/reader on the bus to pay for their fare

The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has lauded the rollout of the “Tap and Go” transport initiative by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

Similar to the popular Oyster Card used in the United Kingdom, “Tap and Go” is a digital card preloaded with cash. Passengers simply tap the card on a fixed machine/reader on the bus to pay for their fare.

The Ghanaian version of the “Tap and Go” card will offer added features, including both physical and virtual versions, for enhanced convenience.

Users will have the option to download the “Tap and Go” app on their mobile phone and choose the virtual card option.

This will allow them to make payments directly through their phone, eliminating the need for a physical card if they prefer.

Appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (20 February), general secretary of GRTCC Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah called for sensitisation on the initiative.

“It is a project we have been discussing with the app developers and I think it is a welcome technology that we will all want to hook onto.”

“So for now, we are all waiting to see it rolled out in the private sector … we should continue with public sensitisation and involve the private transport sector,” he said.
