The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has served notice that transport fares could be reduced in the coming days as fuel prices continue to drop at the pumps.
The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has predicted that prices for fuel will drop significantly at the pump “due to the 6.60% appreciation of the cedi against the US dollar”.
Appearing on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (15 December), the general secretary of GRTCC, Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah said the council is meeting with the transport ministry Thursday over the development.
“We are having a meeting with the Ministry of Transport today and we should have something for the general public at least by tomorrow evening,” he said.
“What I can say categorically is that there will be a change to the fares and by that, I mean a reduction as based on the subsequent reduced rate of fuel pricing,” Yeboah told Kwaku Nhyira-Addo. “We have been actively engaging on this topic of fare price reduction and we should be coming out with something very soon.”
“I don’t think that the call for fare reduction is misplaced. If fares went up as a result of high price of fuel, then with fuel prices going down, I think that it is only fair to ask for fare reduction,” Yeboah added.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) increased transport fares by 19% in October over fuel price hikes.
