IGP interacts with faith-based organisations on religion and law

The meeting also focused on the rights and limitations of the religious community within the confines of the law

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare has met with heads of religious and faith-based organisations to deliberate over issues on religion and the law.

The meeting also focused on the rights and limitations of the religious community within the confines of the law.

Issues discussed include the provisions of the Constitution relating to freedom of religion, the church and mosque as a corporate entity, criminal offences that may be committed by religious bodies or their appointees and possible human right abuses.

Other issues discussed were spirituality and requirements of evidence as required by the court, religious doctrines that contravene provisions of the Constitution and the general enforcement of the law.

The meeting was facilitated by lawyers Ace Ankomah and Samson Lardy Anyenini with Prof Margaret Ivy Amoakohene as moderator.

The police further urged the general public to be mindful of their daily expression of faith and religious beliefs to ensure peaceful co-existence.
