Kate Addo: Public gallery remains closed as Parliament resumes on 25 January

The House is expected to reconvene on Tuesday 25 January 2022 to commence the first meeting of the second session of the Eighth Parliament

Kate Addo, head of public relations at Ghana’s Parliament has said the public gallery of the House will remain closed to the public.

Speaking to Beatrice Adu on the Big Bulletin on Tuesday (18 January), Addo stated that “for now we are still not receiving visitors in the public gallery which is to make sure that we don’t have too many people in parliament and the chamber at the same time to avoid the virus spreading. We also are recommending regular checks for people that work and have business in parliament,” she stated.

Last year, Parliament through the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu announced that the House will no longer allow visitors to enter the public gallery to observe proceedings.

In a statement issued by the public affairs directorate, it noted that the House will reconvene on Tuesday 25 January 2022 to commence the first meeting of the second session of the Eighth Parliament.

The Parliamentary Service has, therefore, informed all members and staff of Parliament to take due notice of the commencement of the meeting which begins at 10 am.

Chaotic scenes

Kate Addo added that consensus building and other conversations have gone on behind the scenes to ensure that the House does not witness the chaotic scenes it experienced during its last sitting in December 2021.

“Parliament is a place where disagreements will always happen but there has been a lot of conversations about how to make sure that members disagree in ways that will not lead to anything that will bring the name of parliament into dispute,” she added.
