Kumawu by-election primaries: Six NPP MP aspirants cleared; two on hold

The NPP is expected to hold an election on Sunday 23 April to select a parliamentary candidate to contest the Kumawu seat following the death of MP, Philip Basoah

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has, until further notice, put the vetting of two of its eight parliamentary aspirants for the Kumawu by-election on hold.

This was confirmed by the chairman of the election committee and first national vice chairman of the party, Danquah Smith Buttey, who briefed journalists shortly after proceedings on Sunday 16 April.

He, however, did not disclose their names or give reasons for the party’s decision. The six others have since received clearance after the vetting.

The chairman said, “we are done with the vetting of the aspirants. It has left with two and we are going to look into their papers before we can clear them.” He stated that the decision had to do with “internal issues, [which] I can’t discuss here.

“We need a very credible candidate to win the by-election. They are all credible, but we need someone who is going to win the seat for us.”

Replacement
After the successful vetting of the aspirants, the party is expected to hold an election on Sunday 23 April to select a parliamentary candidate to contest the seat.

Recall
Parliament, before adjourning sine die for the Easter holidays, notified the Electoral Commission (EC) of the need to conduct a by-election in the Kumawu Constituency following the death of Philip Basoah, the NPP MP for the area.

The EC is yet to fix a date for the by-election. The late 53-year-old MP was a member of the seventh parliament of the Fourth Republic.
