Mohammed Salisu makes Monaco debut after long injury recovery
Mohammed Salisu made his long-awaited debut in the French Ligue 1 as AS Monaco beat Rennes on Saturday.
The 24-year-old played his first game for the French side since his £15 million move from Southampton in August.
Salisu’s debut for the Red and Whites had been delayed due to a long injury. It is his first game since March 2023 for Southampton against Tottenham in the English Premier League.
Salisu played full 90 minutes despite receiving a yellow card in the 62nd minute.
Monaco’s right-back Vanderson opened the scoring in the 51st minute after a goalless first half.
Youssouf Fofana extended Monaco’s lead in 85th minute.
Rennes managed a late consolation goal through Bourigeaud’s penalty in the 90th minute.
“Honestly, it was a great feeling that I hadn’t felt for a very long time.”
“But I had to make my debut today and I am very happy to have done it. I missed everything, the competition, the suppoyers, the atmosphere.”
“Today I had the chance to experience all this again, it’s great!”- said Salisu post match.
Monaco coach Adi Hütter was delighted with Salish’s performance on his debut.
”In the locker room, I spoke to all my players saying that I should congratulate him.”
”He stays on nine months without playing, I am very happy with his performance.” The hardest part is behind him now.
“Yesterday, I thought about the fact that it could start today. He played a good game and was able to show experience, despite his 24 years. He brought us stability.”
