Krachi West gains municipal assembly status

In 2019, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo presented the LI to parliament for Krachi West District to be elevated to municipal status, which was passed

The Krachi West District in the Oti Region has been elevated to a municipal status following a colourful event attended by the regional minister Joshua Makubu, the chief and people of Krachi West.

It is one of the nine districts in the Oti region. It was initially part of the then larger Krachi district established in 1989 by Legislative Instrument (LI).

In 2019, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo presented the LI to parliament for Krachi West District to be elevated to municipal status.

Speaking to Asaase News, Makubu said that as the district has now gained municipal status, it is expected to have more developmental projects. He then charged the assembly to work together to facilitate the growth of the municipality.

“Now that Krachi West has moved from the district assembly to the municipal assembly, it is strategically positioned to benefit from projects that are urban-related. It could be urban water, it could be some infrastructural projects, especially like the secondary city project.

“So, it’s going to bring a lot of development in terms of even human resources, the security aspect…” he said.

The newly appointed MCE Emmanuel Kajal Jalula expressed gratitude to the president for hearing the cry of the people of Krachi West.

“For me, it is an opportunity to even thank the president of Ghana for giving us this opportunity,” he said, adding that there are a lot of challenges and it will take all hands to be on deck to mobilise revenue.

“There is responsibility attached to everything and we know that, as a municipality we have a lot of things to do, probably in terms of our revenue mobilisation. We need to keep up, we need to fight hard and increase the revenue targets.

“We may not be able to do things alone, but we can collaborate with other people, other developed partners, to ensure that this municipality moves forward as it is demanded and as a municipal status,” he said.
