Nsawam: Two die in chieftaincy dispute

The MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has appealed to the Inspector General of Police George Akuffo Dampare to intervene

At least two persons have been killed following a shooting incident in Nsawam-Adoagyiri in the Eastern Region.

Locals said the incident is linked to a chieftaincy dispute in the area.

The MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has appealed to the Inspector General of Police George Akuffo Dampare to intervene.

“It’s terribly disturbing. I am surprised that another person has been shot,” Annoh-Dompreh told Asaase News on Wednesday (30 August). “I want to call on the IGP to step in. It can’t be left with only the police command in Nsawam to maintain law and order.”

Reports say some kingmakers from the Abuakwa traditional council installed a parallel chief for Nsawam-Adoagyiri under heavy police and military protection, angering the residents who paid homage to Akyem Kotoku.

Tuesday’s shooting incident occurred during a float through the principal streets of Nsawam by the parallel chief Kotoko Barima Adu Korkoor III moments after he returned from the Ofori Panin Fie in Kyebi, after swearing an oath to Okyehene and the Abuakwa Traditional Council following his enstoolment last week, reports Accra-based Citi FM.

More police officers have been deployed to the town to maintain law and order.
