Election 2020 data is safe, EC assures NDC

The Electoral Commission (EC) explains the data of Election 2020 has been well preserved, despite contrary claims by the NDC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted claims suggesting its decision to deactivate Biometric Verification Devices used for 7 December elections will destroy evidence related to verified voters.

It follows allegation by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the decision constitutes an illegality and an attempt to destroy evidence after the election.

However, a statement issued by the EC explained it has preserved and safeguarded all electronic and physical records and data relating to the 2020 elections.

The Director of Elections of the NDC, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, in a statement warned the reported deactivation is a violation of the country’s electoral law which states that election materials shall be kept intact for at least one year after an election.

“It has come to the attention of the National Democratic Congress that the Electoral Commission, through Dr. Yaw Ofori Adjei, has directed that all biometric devices used in the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections be deactivated,” part of the statement reads.

“This directive is illegal because Regulation 47 (3) of CI 127 states that ‘The Commission shall, subject to the provisions of these Regulations, (a) retain for a year, documents forwarded to the Commission; and (b) destroy the documents after a year unless otherwise directed by a court,” it added.

However, the EC’s statement said the data has been preserved.
