NHIA begins payment of arrears to private health providers

The payment of arrears comes after private health providers threatened to partially withdraw their services over non payment of arrears

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has begun clearing arrears owed National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) service providers in Ghana.

It comes after Parliament approved the budget of the NHIA to facilitate its operation for this year after some delays.

The payment of arrears comes after private health providers threatened to partially withdraw their services over non-payment of arrears.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday (13 April) Dr Lydia Dsane-Selby, chief executive of the National Health Insurance Authority, said “We have already loaded September and October, so it’s about just making the payments. I would like to believe we have a good relationship with them, the threat was jumping on the bandwagon of the media saying we have been sacked from Parliament, that is what triggered that.”

“You know sometimes a news item comes out which is not quite factual and everybody jumps on the bandwagon … we have a good relationship with them, I don’t think any of them want to leave the NHIS anytime soon,” she said.

The NHIA boss advised private health providers who have a challenge in accessing their arrears to lodge a complaint with her outfit.
