Komenda Sugar Factory still operational, says board member

The Concerned Citizens of Komenda Traditional Area alleged that the Komenda Sugar Factory was shut down days after President Akufo-Addo toured the factory

Authorities at the Komenda Sugar Factory have refuted claims suggesting the factory has been shut down days after President Akufo-Addo toured the area.

A group known as the Concerned Citizens of the Komenda Traditional Area is reported to have said the Komenda Sugar Factory was shut down days after the president’s visit to the Central Region.

Reacting to the development on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (12 September), Perry Mensah, a board member of the Komenda Sugar Factory said, “I don’t know where that report is coming from because the Komenda Sugar Factory has not been shut down.”

“To the best of my knowledge, for the next 45 days to 60 days, we will still be doing the test run, and after the test run, after we have achieved the results we want the factory will resume operations,” he told host Kwaku Nhyira-Addo.

Background

The Komenda Sugar Factory was built at a cost of US$35 million from an Indian EXIM Bank facility.

It was inaugurated by then-President, John Mahama in May 2016 but stopped operations not long after.

The factory was expected to employ 7,300 people along the value chain, boosting employment prospects in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem municipality.
