Godfred Yeboah Dame, Attorney-General and Minister of JusticeThe Atorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame has refuted claims by persons associated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on an allegation made by the third accused person, Richard Jakpa, during proceedings in court on Thursday (23 May) that he (Attorney General) desired his cooperation in the matter in order to secure a conviction of the 1st accused, Cassiel Ato Forson.

A statement signed by the deputy attorney general, Alfred Tuah Yeboah on Thursday (23 May) said “It is rather the third accused who, by various letters dated 27 April, 2023, 16 May, 2023, 30 May, 2023 and 12 June 2023, has proposed to the Republic through the Attorney General to engage in plea bargaining or plea negotiations. This plea bargaining proposal has, to date, not been accepted by the Attorney General.”

“Even though the law on plea bargaining passed by Parliament permits a prosecutor to negotiate with an accused person after a plea proposal has been made, the Attorney General has not engaged the third accused person to give false testimony in the matter.”

Bawumia: I am campaigning on issues, not insults

Vice President and presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that he is executing his presidential campaign on issues of interest to the Ghanaian people and not on insults.

Dr Bawumia made this assertion in response to an admonishing by the Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV when he paid a courtesy call on him at his palace in Wa today, Sunday, 19 May 2024 at the start of his two-day campaign tour of the Upper West Region.

The Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, in his statement, read on his behalf, called on Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and all other presidential candidates to run a campaign devoid of insults but rich on the policies and plans they have to improve the living and economic standards of Ghanaians.

EC extends voter registration exercise to 29 May

The Electoral Commission (EC) has extended the deadline for the ongoing voters registration exercise to 29 May.

The exercise was expected to end 27 May 2024.

In a statement on Friday (24 May), the EC said the extension has become necessary to make up for the network challenges experienced during the first two days of the exercise.

“The exercise will now end on Wednesday the 29th of May 2024. This arrangement has been put in place to make up for the network challenges experienced during the first two (2) days of the registration exercise,” the notice read.

Samia Nkrumah meets Egyptian President to discuss cultural exchange and regional stability

Samia Nkrumah, daughter of Ghana’s first president Kwame Nkrumah, met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi on Tuesday (21 May) at Al-Ittihadiya Palace in Cairo, Egypt.

As a member of the board of trustees of Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a renowned library and cultural centre, Nkrumah discussed the importance of cultural exchange and knowledge sharing with President Al-Sisi.

The meeting emphasised the library’s role in promoting dialogue between civilisations and strengthening understanding among peoples. President Al-Sisi highlighted the need for innovative ideas, scientific and cultural development, and creativity among youth to prepare them for future responsibilities.

Majority Caucus: No NPP MP has been allocated recruitment slots into security agencies

The Majority Caucus in Parliament has denied allegations suggesting the government’s involvement in the illegal recruitment of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members into the various security agencies.

Earlier, the Minority in Parliament alleged that each NPP parliamentary candidate has been given 30 slots for enlistment in the various security services.

They claim that the move is to sway the outcomes of the forthcoming 2024 general elections.

Addressing the media on Tuesday (21 May 2024), Patricia Appiaagyei, the deputy majority leader, described the claim by the Minority as false and an attempt by the caucus to incite public disfavour against the government ahead of the general elections.

Memounatou Ibrahima elected first female Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament

Memounatou Ibrahima, a member of the Togolese Parliament, has been elected as the first female Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament.

She was elected on Thursday in plenary during the 2024 Second Extraordinary Session of of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament in Kano, Nigeria.

This is the first time that a female has held the post since the establishment of the first legislature of Parliament in 2000.
