YEA creates 83,000 jobs in 2023, exceeds target by 16%, says CEO

The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) said it has so far created over 83,000 jobs for the first quarter of 2023, exceeding its target by 16%.

Speaking to Benjamin Offei-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show, the chief executive of YEA, Kofi Baah Agyepong, said despite the feat, the agency is poised to roll out a new module dubbed “Youth in Garment and Textiles” on Monday (14 August) in the Ashanti Region.

“In the beginning of the year, YEA started with the recruitment of 15,000 community protection assistants, after we did 6,000 community health assistants,” he said. “We have also done 1,500 prison assistants.”

“And these are verifiable data,…we exceeded our growth target for the year, you know when you go to Parliament you make your projections. We projected to offer employment opportunities for 71, 500 youth and by the end of March we exceeded by 16%., which is a little over 83,000,” Agyapong added.

About the youth in garment and textiles

The module, which will be rolled out on Monday (14 August) aims to bridge skill gaps and create sustainable employment opportunities for young people interested in tailoring or dressmaking and ultimately contribute towards the growth and development of the industry and by extension, the economy of Ghana.

This module has been designed carefully to afford beneficiaries the opportunity to receive in-depth knowledge and hands-on training in various aspects of tailoring and dressmaking, including fabric selection, cutting techniques, sewing, garment construction, pattern making, and alterations.

The programme also targets to directly engage already existing apparel start–ups to support in the implementation process to achieve the desired objectives and this will involve;

1. On-the-Job Training in the various skill areas to be undertaken by selected Garment and Textile partner companies

2. Micro and Small- scale seamstresses and tailors –they would provide apprenticeship for the youth within their communities.
