Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a presidential candidate hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is concerned about the governing party’s chances in the 2024 election.
The former agriculture minister said the hopes of NPP supporters have declined under the current leadership and that could affect the party’s fortunes.
“It’s clear to me that morale is very low,” Akoto said. “The anticipation of a better life by our supporters across the country has not come true. Therefore, the NPP may not be in a good position to win the next election, and we need to address this issue seriously.”
He urged NPP delegates to make their votes count in the 4 November polls by choosing him as the flagbearer.
Akoto said the NPP’s wellbeing and success are closely tied to his leadership, adding his experience as a former MP gives him a deep understanding of grassroot issues and the concerns expressed by NPP activists.
“For anyone aiming to lead the NPP, our top priority should be addressing the concerns of the people on the ground. I have a thorough understanding of grassroots issues, having served as a Member of Parliament in Kwadaso. This puts me in a unique position to relate to the concerns expressed by our grassroots activists,” he added.
Ashanti tour suspended
Meanwhile, Akoto has suspended his intended tour of the Ashanti Region.
This sombre decision follows the unfortunate passing of former first lady, Theresa Aba Kufuor. The 88-year-old, who was the beloved wife of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, peacefully departed on Sunday night at her residence in Peduase after a period of illness.
“We have suspended our Ashanti regional campaign tour as a sign of respect for the loss of the first lady Theresa Kufuor,” he said.
“We will come back at the appropriate time, and we will be informed. But I want to take this opportunity to convey my deepest respect to the delegates of NPP who have been called upon to make a decision for the party. The real contest is on November 4. I’m calling on the delegates to vote for me,” he said.
