EC sets 27 June for Assin North by-election

The Supreme Court has declared the election and swearing-in of the MP for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, as unconstitutional, null, void and of no effect

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced Tuesday, 27 June as the date for the by-election in Assin North in the Central Region.

The EC in a statement said nominations for prospective candidates will be received from Monday, 12 June to Wednesday 14 June from 9:00am to 12:00pm and from 2:00pm to 5:00pm each day.

The forms will be available for download from Thursday (1 June).

“The filing fee for the election is GHC10,000.00 per candidate,” the statement said.

“All completed nomination forms are expected to be delivered in quadruplicate.”

On 17 May, a seven-member Supreme Court panel presided over by Justice Jones Dotse has, by unanimous decision, declared the election and swearing-in of the MP for Assin North in the Central Region, James Gyakye Quayson, sitting on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as unconstitutional, null, void and of no effect.

The apex court held that Quayson was not qualified to contest for the position of Member of Parliament at the time of filing his nomination forms in the lead-up to the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The court further held that the Electoral Commission (EC) erred when it allowed Quayson to stand for the Assin North seat in the 2020 general election when he had not shown evidence of renunciation of his Canadian citizenship.
