EC declares Akufo-Addo winner of Election 2020

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is officially the winner of the 2020 presidential election, beating John Dramani Mahama of the NDC for the second time running

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election, defeating John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, Jean Mensa, the chair of the Electoral Commission, announced on Wednesday (9 December).

Akufo-Addo won by 51.59% of the total votes cast as against Mahama’s 6,214,889 representing 47.36%. Akufo-Addo polled a total of 6,730,413 votes out of the total 13,434,574.

Crowds of jubilant supporters have hit the streets of Accra and other parts of the country to celebrate the victory of the 76-year-old New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader.

Akufo-Addo first defeated John Mahama by securing 53.8% of the votes cast to his rival’s 44.4% in the 2016 election.

Ghana’s elections historically have been close, with Mahama winning narrowly against Akufo-Addo in 2012 with 50.7% of the vote. In those elections, Akufo-Addo unsuccessfully challenged Mahama’s victory in the courts.

It is expected that the flagbearer of the NDC will soon speak to the media to concede to the president.

With Akufo-Addo’s victory, the country is poised to kick-start an economy that has been damaged by the COVID-19 pandemic but has been tipped to recover faster than originally predicted.

It was his fourth shot at the presidency, his first successful run having been his third attempt. On Sunday Akufo-Addo said he hoped to be retained on 7 December to complete his tenure and, in his own words, “build on the solid foundation laid in the first term”.
