Adutwum to UG: Find lasting solution to violent clashes on campus

Adutwum made the call after holding a meeting with the university authorities to get first hand information on the latest clashes between two halls of residence

The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has charged the management of the University of Ghana to find a lasting solution to the recurring violent clashes between the students of Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah halls.

Adutwum made the call after holding a meeting with the university authorities to get first hand information on the latest clashes between the two halls.

“Today, the Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum visited the university for updates from the Vice-Chancellor following the recent clashes between two halls of residence,” the university posted on Facebook.

“He expressed support for the measures put in place by UG management to ensure that academic and administrative work continue peacefully and asked management to also focus on long-term measures to curb violence between students in the two halls.”

“The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Nana Aba Appiah Amfo was grateful for the support from the ministry and stressed that UG management is working with the Ghana Police Service to safeguard peace and stability on all campuses of the university,” the university added.

Suspend vandals hall master and senior tutor, says UG council

Meanwhile, the University of Ghana Council has recommended for the removal of the hall master and senior tutor of Commonwealth Hall following violent clashes between students of the hall and that of Mensah Sarbah Hall.

The council also recommended that Commonwealth Hall be charged with the cost of damage to property in the vicinity of Mensah Sarbah Hall.

A bust of John Mensah Sarbah was stolen during the clash on 5 August. Also, the SRC Union Building signboard and newly renovated SRC notice board were also destroyed during the clash.

In a statement, the council recommended that the management of the two halls be held accountable for their actions and inactions for the persistent riots.

“The hall master and senior tutor of Commonwealth Hall have not exhibited sufficient willingness and ability to hold students of the hall accountable for their actions in the recent violent clashes,” the council said in a statement.

In addition, students who are offered places in halls of residence are also to be made to sign undertakings to be of good behaviour.
