Akakom chief, six others swear oath of allegiance to Okyenhene

On Monday, 3 April, 2023 the Ofori Panin Fie was thrown into jubilant mood following the installation of seven Chiefs who presented themselves to the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin to swear the Oath of Allegiance to the Ofori Panin stool.

The ceremony which was hugely attended was preceded by the performance of necessary customary rites by the kingmakers of the various stools to validate the installation process.

Per Akyem Abuakwa custom, when a stool is declared vacant, a prospective candidate hailing from the appropriate family is first of all selected by the queen mother or the head of family from which the stool resides.

The candidate is then presented to the kingmakers for approval after which he is led by the Divisional Chief to the Kyebi Executive Council for vetting, final confirmation and installation.  He is later presented to the Okyenhene to swear the Oath of Allegiance to the Ofori Panin stool.

The administration of the Oath by the Okyenhene gives the final customary validity to the installation and enstoolment process.

The seven chiefs included: – Osabarima Opoku Brako Kesse II, Okumanin Daaman, Osabarima Atta Appeakorang Adjei II, Anyinasin, Barima Aboagye Musu II, Akakom and Barima Owusu Beyeeman, Muorso.

The rest are Barima Ofori Asante, Adadientem, Barima Asare Owusu Amoaning II, Abaamu, and Bafour Twumasi Addo Dankwa, Domeabra Amponsahhene

In line with custom, the State Secretary, D. M. Ofori-Atta, informed the chiefs of the passage of two major resolutions by the Akyem Abuakwa State Council.  He said, newly installed chiefs are enjoined to ratify the resolutions after the administration of their oral Oath by the Okyenhene.

He read out the obligations set out in the written Oath indicating that the Oath enjoins Nananom “to bear true faith and allegiance to the Kingdom of Akyem Abuakwa as established at customary law;

“That they will be faithful, true and loyal to the occupant of the Ofori Panin stool at all times, that they will honour and obey all calls by the Okyenhene at all times.

“They will preserve, protect and defend the rules of law which by custom and tradition are applicable in the kingdom of Akyem Abuakwa.

“That they shall dedicate themselves to the service and well-being of the people of Akyem Abuakwa, the supreme authority of the occupant of the Ofori Panin stool to observe, adhere to and hold solemn all declarations of the Akyem Abuakwa State Council and to do right to all manner of persons” the Oath read in part.

The chiefs took turns to swear their oral oath to their Overlord the Okyenhene. In response, the Okyenhene reminded Nananom of the sanctity of the oath and the legal and customary obligation it imposes on them.

He said by presenting their sword of office to be trampled under his feet, they have submitted themselves to the service and unquestioning obedience of the Ofori Panin stool.

Osagyefuo admonished the chiefs to seek the interest of their subjects in all respects and initiate measures to develop their respective towns.  He urged them to consult their stool elders in all decisions. The Okyenhene assured the Chiefs of his support and protection in times of need.
