Akufo-Addo appoints Samuel Mahama as ECG MD

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the sector minister in accordance with relevant provisions of the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992), is to take necessary steps to regularise the said appointment

President Nana Akufo-Addo has nominated Samuel Dubik Masubir Mahama to be appointed as the managing director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

In a letter dated 13 May 2022 and addressed to Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister of Energy, the president instructed Dr Prempeh to take steps to regularise Mahama’s appointment, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Companies Act 2019 (Act 992).

The letter was signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante.

Earlier, in an internal arrangement communicated in a circular dated 12 May and signed by ECG’s director of human resources, Cynthia Amartey, the company’s board appointed Jones Ofori-Addo to act as the managing director until a substantive appointment for the position was made.

“All staff are expected to give him the maximum support in the discharge of his duties,” said the circular, copied to a list of personnel including directors, general managers, supervisors and the general secretary of the Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU).

Samuel Mahama takes over from Kwame Agyeman-Budu who was appointed as the managing director of Electricity Company of Ghana, on 3 November 2019, having served as its deputy managing director.

Agyeman-Budu took over from Engineer Samuel Boakye-Appiah, who was directed to vacate the post after serving for almost three years.

Meanwhile, the management of ECG has also confirmed the appointment of Mahama as the new MD in a press statement.

75 years of power

The Electricity Company of Ghana is a limited liability company wholly owned by the Government of Ghana. It was incorporated under the Companies Code 1963 in February 1997.

It launched as the Electricity Department on 1 April 1947 and became the Electricity Division in 1962.

Before becoming ECG, as it is now called, the Electricity Department was turned into Electricity Corporation of Ghana in 1967 by NLC Decree 125.

In July 1987, the Volta River Authority set up the Northern Electricity Department (NED, now NEDCo), which took over from ECG responsibility for the management of electrical power distribution in the Brong-Ahafo, Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions.

ECG is responsible for distribution of electricity in nine operational divisions covering the southern part of Ghana – namely, Accra East, Accra West, Ashanti, Central, Eastern, Tema, Volta, Western and sub-transmission – which are further decentralised into 88 operational districts.
