Ambulance case: AG won’t sue for defamation, says spokesperson

Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ongoing case against Cassiel Ato Forson, on Friday (23 May), alleged in court that the Attorney General had repeatedly tried to persuade him to falsely implicate the Minority Leader

The Office of the Attorney General has said it will not press charges against persons peddling lies against the AG Godfred Yeboah Dame in the ongoing ambulance case.

The AG has refuted claims by persons associated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on an allegation made by the third accused person, Richard Jakpa, during proceedings in court on Thursday (23 May) that he (Attorney General) desired his cooperation in the matter in order to secure a conviction of the first accused, Cassiel Ato Forson.

A statement signed by the deputy attorney general, Alfred Tuah Yeboah on Thursday (23 May) said “It is rather the third accused who, by various letters dated 27 April 2023, 16 May 2023, 30 May 2023 and 12 June 2023, has proposed to the Republic through the Attorney General to engage in plea bargaining or plea negotiations. This plea bargaining proposal has, to date, not been accepted by the Attorney General.”

The Attorney-General has also indicated that he has video evidence of the first accused person, Cassiel Ato Forson, coming to meet him and to plead with him to discontinue the prosecution.

The Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice said it considers the latest allegation levelled against the Attorney General as part of a grand scheme by the NDC to put more pressure on him to discontinue the prosecution or to divert attention from the real issues regarding the actions of the accused persons which have caused enormous financial loss to the State.

Speaking to Benjamin Offei-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (24 May), the spokesperson of the Office of the Attorney General, Isaac Wilberforce Mensah said the AG will not sue for defamation.

“Defamatory suit, once again I would say now is not necessary. I mean these are political discussions and the first accused person or the first accused person has been charged with a criminal offence..”

” So if the defence in this case is that the Attorney General had negotiations with the third accused person, if that’s the defence then it will be a bit difficult in court for the defence I should say,” he said.
